February 2004 -- Super time in a great county!

We heard such great things from our friends, so we decided to dedicate two full weeks to Costa Rica.  We booked our trip through G.A.P, a Canadian travel company that specializes in small, backpacking groups.  This gives you minimal impact in small towns and provides the opportunity to really get to know your fellow travelers.  We highly recommend GAP; it's no frills travel but you walk away from your experience with real insight of what the people and the country are like.  The pace can be hectic, but you see and do things that larger groups will never see.  There also is flexibility in your choices of excursions at each destination.  This is especially important to us since it gives both of us a choice to split apart for the day, but still be with friends.  One day Herb went rafting while I went to a spa; another day Herb went zip-lining while I spent the day exploring Monteverde.  For a full look at our itinerary, take a look here.

The Great Adventure People are an enthusiastic group of travelers dedicated to providing small group grass roots adventure travel and eco tours to people all over the world. G.A.P offers thousands of departures on 1000 adventures to 100 countries worldwide, and a variety of travel styles to suite everyone with a desire to put some adventure into their holidays and vacations.

Whether you are looking to challenge yourself with a trek to Machu Picchu or prefer a more leisurely bike trip through Provence, wildlife viewing in Africa, a boat trip in the Galapagos Islands, a cruise to Antarctica, or a relaxing week in Costa Rica, the Great Adventure People have the experience, the expertise and the passion to help you get the most from your adventure holiday

Herb at the end of his rope!

Before leaving home, Herb made reservations to bungee jump on our first full day in San Jose (prior to joining our GAP group.)  He assured me that Tropical Bungee had never had an accident -- I reminded him that they were probably "due" and hope that he wasn't going to be their first casualty

Our van picked us up at our hotel, Don Carlos, and we were off.  After about a 1/2 hour ride, and complete instructions from the jump company, the locals cheered as my  gringo stood on the platform.  Would he jump or wouldn't he?  We didn't know the gallery commonly took bets on whether first-timers would go over the edge.   Then he was off!

Next time you stop by our house, ask to see the 5 minute video!

Below is a sampling of some of our photos.
